This poem was written by Scott Sullivan, one of the heroes of Relay For Life of West Hartford, CT & the fight against cancer.  He is a single person team that raised over$10,000 this year in memory of his mother, Laurie.  His team name is Lappin’ For Laurie, and Scott walked a full marathon during his local Relay on June 1 & 2, 2013 in West Hartford, CT.
Scott wrote this on Day 2 of the Relay, and shared it at the closing ceremony.
Thanks for sharing, Scott!  You are an inspiration to many.

As we gather here together
on this bright and sunny day,
we came to send a message
so that cancer goes away.
We braved the heat and lapped the track
And marched on through the night,
Cancer now has met its match
And we will win this fight.
We pushed ourselves to meet our goals
for those we've loved or lost,
It shows that we will persevere
No matter what the cost.
For some you've lost a loved one
Or someone lost their strength
We all have banned together
and will go to any length.
For me her name was Laurie
And I miss her oh so much
Her laugh, her voice, her loving care
And her warm and gentle touch.

And you all have you reason
For someone you hold dear,
and that's why we keep coming back
To join this fight each year.
As we pack our bags and head on home
And soak up all the sun,
We may not yet have won this war
But this battle we have won.
So I look ahead out to next year
And I hope to see you all,
Please know we've done all that we can
so stand up straight and tall.
For we have stared down cancer
And showed her what's in store ,
And we'll push on and strive real hard
'til cancer is no more.

Thank you all for making the 2013 West Hartford Relay For Life the best event yet.

Thank you again for making a difference in your community!

The journey to end cancer starts with a single step. The American Cancer Society thanks you for taking that step with us by joining the global Relay For Life movement. When you walk to end cancer at a Relay event, it's your opportunity to not only honor cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost, but also to raise awareness about what we can do to stay well from cancer and raise money to help fuel the world's largest walk to end cancer.  Thank you joining us in the fight against cancer this year.
